Too often, government policy criminalizes being poor and makes it more difficult for low-income folks to achieve upward mobility. ASEO member State Assemblywoman Rochelle Nguyen put humanist values into action by successfully decriminalizing traffic tickets in Nevada.
Her bipartisan legislation was introduced with broad support, including from Nevada Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro and Assistant Minority Whip, Republican Lisa Krasner. Her bill handily passed both chambers and was signed by Governor Sisolak in June 2021.
